🤨 Happiness: is it a choice?

Exploring the intricate relationship between happiness, personal choice, and the practice of mindfulness.

Being happy is defined as feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. If we’re happy, we feel good.

In the universal pursuit of this largely elusive state, a recurring question arises:

  • Is happiness a choice?

  • Is it a consequence of external circumstances?

  • Can mindfulness play an important role in shaping our happiness?

This article delves into these questions, exploring the intricate relationship between happiness, personal choice, and the practice of mindfulness.

🙋 Happiness as a Choice…

The notion that happiness is a choice is rooted in the philosophy that individuals have the power to control their thoughts, attitudes, and reactions to external events.

Proponents of this perspective argue that even in challenging circumstances, you can choose to focus on the positive aspects of life (e.g. fostering a mindset that invites happiness).

This outlook emphasises the importance of personal responsibility in cultivating a pleasurable and contented life.

Supporters of the idea that happiness is a choice often point to the concept of neuroplasticity.

This is the brain's ability to reorganise itself, forming new neural connections throughout life.

By consciously choosing positive thoughts and behaviours, individuals can reshape their neural pathways, gradually leading to a more positive and optimistic outlook on life.

In light of my personal experiences, I find myself increasingly endorsing this approach.

Nevertheless, this endorsement is contingent upon the fulfilment of our fundamental needs first (i.e. our physiological wellbeing, safety, and security).

🧠 Mindfulness and Happiness…

Mindfulness, rooted in ancient practices like meditation and more recently, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), has gained significant attention in contemporary discussions about happiness and wellbeing.

At its core, mindfulness involves cultivating awareness of the present moment without any form of judgment or analysis.

Experiencing now for what it is, whatever it is.

This state of awareness allows us to observe our thoughts and feelings without being overwhelmed or controlled by them.

Numerous studies have suggested a positive correlation between mindfulness and happiness.

By practicing mindfulness, we can break free from the shackles of rumination about the past or excessive worry about the future.

This presence in the moment usually promotes a sense of calm, acceptance, and, ultimately, contentment.

Over time, consistent mindfulness practice can lead to increased emotional resilience, enhanced self-awareness, and a greater capacity for experiencing joy in everyday moments, among other benefits.

Practicing mindfulness can lead you to discover greater joy in everyday moments and cultivate a deeper sense of contentment.

💭 The Interplay between Choice and Mindfulness…

Although the notion of happiness as a choice and the application of mindfulness might appear separate initially, I advocate for their integration rather than considering them mutually exclusive.

They can complement each other in the pursuit of a happier life.

Rather than being slaves to automatic and potentially negative thought patterns, mindfulness empowers us to shape our mental landscape consciously, so we can experience more happiness.

While acknowledging external circumstances can influence our wellbeing, there is compelling evidence that personal choice and mindfulness practices play crucial roles in shaping our happiness.

Ultimately, happiness may not be an either/or scenario but rather a delicate interplay between cultivating a positive mindset through choice, and embracing mindfulness as a means of navigating life's complexities to find contentment and joy in what we do.
